“When I was a medic treating critically wounded soldiers, I was taught that you shouldn’t talk to the wounds. Instead, you must talk to the spirit. I was never a great medic, but I learned how to restore a person’s humanity. The wounds will heal. People can function without a limb, without an eye, without certain organs. But you can’t function with a depleted spirit. Unless someone throws you the life preserver of self-worth, you’ll drown in an ocean of despair.”
